Real Life in the NICU: Edina Newborn Photography That Honors the Journey

NICU life is a world of its own. You don’t get handed a map, there’s no official guidebook, and no one gives you a gold star for surviving another night sleeping upright in a hospital chair. It’s raw and intense and beautiful in a way that doesn’t always make sense until later.

When I walk into a NICU session at Southdale Fairview in Edina or anywhere else in the Twin Cities, I’m there to create something beautiful. These photos are about connection, resilience, and the quiet, powerful moments unfolding right in front of you. That first time your baby made it over four pounds. The feeding tube resting beside their cheek. Your hand gently cupping their head, just sitting with them like you’ve done every day since they arrived earlier than expected. Every detail deserves to be captured with care and intention—because this season matters, and it should look just as meaningful as it feels.

This is the kind of Edina NICU newborn session I’m here for. Not staged. Not polished. But deeply meaningful.

Why NICU photos are worth it

Look, I get it. When your baby is in the NICU, your brain is juggling about 42 things at once. You’re learning new medical terms daily. You’re navigating feeding plans, oxygen levels, and possibly pumping around the clock. The idea of squeezing in a photo session might feel impossible.

But here’s the thing. NICU photos give something back. A pause. A perspective. A way to hold on to the beauty in the middle of everything else.

You’ve already lost a lot of the expected parts of newborn life. These photos bring something back into your hands. A chance to slow down for just a moment. A visual record of strength. A way to say, yes, this happened. And we showed up.

For families delivering at hospitals like Southdale Fairview in Edina, NICU newborn photography isn’t about capturing Pinterest-perfect portraits. It’s about making sure your baby’s story gets told from the very beginning, cords and all.

What an Edina NICU newborn session looks like

When I come into the NICU, I come as a guest of your family. Sessions usually take about 30 to 45 minutes, depending on how your baby is doing that day. I work with you to make sure your baby stays comfortable and that the session works within your care routine.

I’m not there to rearrange your baby. I’m there to capture the beauty of what’s already happening. Maybe your baby just started learning how to bottle feed. Maybe it’s kangaroo care day and they’re snuggled against your chest. Maybe they’re deep asleep under soft lights, peacefully growing stronger by the hour.

These photos are about real moments in real time.

One tiny fighter, one powerful story

I recently photographed a baby at Southdale Fairview who arrived well before their due date after a sudden medical complication. We’re talking emergency delivery, tiny baby, a whirlwind of emotions. At just over four pounds, this little one was already working hard learning how to feed. The timeline for discharge was a big question mark, but the family knew they wanted to capture this moment before things changed again.

And that’s the magic of NICU photography. It’s a way to pause. Not because everything is easy, but because it matters.

Your baby doesn’t need to be out of the hospital to start their legacy. It’s already in the way they fight. The way you show up every single day. The way you hold their hand through the isolette and count every gram they gain like it’s a win. Because it is.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the right time to book a NICU newborn session?

Any time after your baby is stable and you’re feeling ready. Some families book right away. Others wait until they’re closer to discharge. As long as your baby is medically cleared for handling and your care team approves, we can plan a session. I usually recommend sometime between 34 and 38 weeks gestational age, but I’m flexible.  Just keep in mind my schedule does book well in advance so you cannot try and schedule me for the day or even week before you get discharged.  Plan in advance.

What happens if the baby goes home before the session?

If your baby is discharged before we’re able to do the session, that’s wonderful news. I know it can feel a little bittersweet, since it means the complimentary hospital session is no longer an option. But we’ll simply cancel. If you’d still like to work with me, you’re welcome to schedule a full newborn session in my studio or in your home—whatever feels right for your family.

Can parents be in the photos?

Yes. Please. I encourage you to be in the frame. These are not just baby portraits. They are family portraits, even if your little one is still attached to medical equipment. If hospital policy allows, we can even include siblings. You’ll never regret having a photo of yourself holding your baby during one of the most challenging and powerful seasons of your life.

Final thoughts for Edina families with babies in the NICU

If you’re currently living the NICU life in Edina or the surrounding area, and wondering if now is the right time for photos, I want to say something very simple. You are doing an incredible job. You are loving your baby in a way that deserves to be remembered.

NICU newborn photography isn’t about glossing over the hard parts. It’s about honoring them. And turning them into something you can hold long after the beeping monitors are behind you.

If your baby is currently at Southdale Fairview or another hospital nearby and you’re thinking about photos, reach out. I only take on a few of these sessions each month to make sure I can give each family the time and care they need.

There’s no pressure, no rush. Just an open heart and a camera ready when you are.

With 15 years of experience photographing newborns and families in the Twin Cities, Michele has a calm presence, a sharp eye for meaningful details, and an uncanny ability to capture the beauty in real moments—yes, even in a hospital room filled with monitors.
