Choosing In-Home Newborn Photography means you do not have to pack everyone up and bring a new baby across town for photographs. Instead, I come to your North Oaks home and create the session around your baby, your family, and the spaces that photograph best.

I have photographed newborns and families for more than 15 years, and one thing has remained consistent: a successful newborn session does not depend on a sleeping baby, a perfectly decorated house, or an older sibling who follows every direction. Good planning and a flexible approach matter far more.

What Is In-Home Newborn Photography Like?

An in-home newborn session includes more than photographs of the baby alone. The goal is to create a complete set of images that shows the baby individually and with the people who are already such an important part of her world.

During this North Oaks newborn session, we photographed the family together, each parent with the baby, the baby with her older brother, and the siblings individually. We also made time for photographs of the baby resting, stretching, looking around, and being held.

Some images were created on the parents’ bed, where everyone had room to sit closely together. Others used a bright windowed area and the baby’s nursery. Each space added something different without requiring the family to prepare the entire house.

The baby was awake for part of the session and asleep for other photographs. Both worked. Open eyes, moving arms, tiny stretches, and serious newborn expressions are all worth including.

Does My Home Need to Look Perfect for Newborn Photos?

No. I am not coming to inspect your house, and we do not need to photograph every room.

What matters most is finding a few areas with useful light and enough space for the people being photographed. Before the session, I help determine which rooms are likely to work best so you know where to focus your preparation.

For this North Oaks family, we used three main areas:

  • The bedroom for family photographs and sibling images
  • A large windowed sitting area for wider compositions
  • The nursery for quieter photographs of the baby with her parents

A bedroom, nursery, living room, or even a clear corner near a window can be enough. The most visually impressive room is not always the one with the best light, so location planning is based on both the space and the time of day.

You also do not need to remove every personal item. A few distractions may be moved temporarily, but the home should still look like a home.

What Should We Wear for Newborn Family Photos?

Wardrobe planning is part of the newborn photography experience. I help families choose clothing that works with their home, photographs well together, and keeps the attention on the people in the images.

For this session, Mom wore a dress from my studio wardrobe, and the baby wore a knit outfit from the newborn collection. The rest of the family wore soft shades of gray, cream, and tan, creating a coordinated look without everyone wearing the same thing.

In general, I recommend:

  • Light or softly muted colors
  • Simple fabrics with subtle texture
  • Clothing without large logos or prominent graphics
  • Pieces that allow you to sit, hold the baby, and move comfortably
  • Colors that coordinate rather than match exactly

My client wardrobe includes options for mothers and babies, along with additional pieces for younger children. Families may use as much or as little of it as they need.

How Are Sibling Photos Handled During an In-Home Newborn Session?

Older siblings do not need to participate for the entire session. I use a child-led approach, which means I work in shorter stretches and adjust the order based on what the child is ready to do.

The older brother in this North Oaks session was photographed holding his baby sister, giving her a kiss, lying beside her, and sitting with the rest of the family. These interactions gave us several different sibling photographs without expecting him to repeat the same pose over and over.

I usually prioritize sibling and full-family photographs while an older child is interested. After those are finished, the child can take a break while I continue with the baby and parents.

This approach is especially helpful at home. Siblings have familiar toys, snacks, and spaces nearby, and they do not have to spend the entire session waiting in an unfamiliar studio.

Does the Baby Need to Sleep Through the Session?

A newborn does not need to sleep through the session. Some babies are sleepy, some are alert, and many move back and forth between the two.

This baby gave us wide-open eyes, stretches, little hand movements, and several wonderfully skeptical expressions. She also slept long enough for quieter images with her brother and parents.

My approach is baby-led. I do not require a newborn to remain in one position or follow a rigid posing sequence. We pause when the baby needs to eat, be changed, or settle with a parent.

An alert baby is not a problem to solve. It simply gives us a different set of photographs.

Any sleeping images created during a newborn session are photographed with an adult nearby and are not meant to represent an overnight sleep setup. For everyday sleep, families should follow the American Academy of Pediatrics’ safe sleep guidance, including placing babies on their backs on a firm, flat sleep surface.

How Do We Plan an In-Home Newborn Session?

Planning begins before I arrive. I help with the choices that can otherwise start to pile up during the final weeks of pregnancy.

That support may include:

  • Choosing clothing for each family member
  • Selecting pieces from the client wardrobe
  • Discussing which rooms may work best
  • Planning family, sibling, and individual photographs
  • Identifying any images that are especially important to you
  • Considering how you may want to display the finished photographs

You do not need to know how to arrange everyone or where to stand. I make those decisions during the session based on the light, the baby, and what is working for your family.

The session is guided, but there is room to adjust. Newborns tend to ignore schedules, which is information every parent has already received by the time I arrive.

What Happens After the Newborn Session?

A newborn gallery usually contains several kinds of photographs: the entire family, each parent with the baby, siblings together, individual baby images, and smaller details.

I help families narrow those photographs into a meaningful collection rather than leaving them with a folder they never quite finish sorting.

An album works particularly well for an in-home newborn session because it can hold the full story. Wider photographs of the home can sit alongside close images of the baby’s face, hands, feet, and interactions with each family member.

Framed artwork can be created from one or two especially strong family or parent-and-baby images. We can consider where the artwork will hang, what size makes sense, and which photographs belong together before anything is ordered.

Planning In-Home Newborn Photography in North Oaks

An in-home session gives your family the convenience of staying home while still receiving planning, wardrobe guidance, direction, and help creating finished artwork.

This North Oaks session worked because we used the available light, kept the clothing simple, followed the baby’s lead, and gave her older brother manageable ways to participate. The result was a gallery that included the baby as she was and the family welcoming her home.

I photograph newborn sessions in North Oaks, Minneapolis, St. Paul, and throughout the Twin Cities. You can begin by viewing the newborn portfolio or contacting me to discuss whether your home or my Northeast Minneapolis studio would be the better fit.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I book In-Home Newborn Photography?

It is best to reserve In-Home Newborn Photography while you are still pregnant. I generally schedule the initial session date for approximately one week after your due date, and then we adjust it as needed once your baby arrives.

How long does an In-Home Newborn Photography session take?

A Signature In-Home Newborn Photography session generally lasts between one and two hours. This allows time for feeding, changing, settling, sibling photographs, family images, and individual photographs of the baby without rushing.

Can parents and siblings be included in In-Home Newborn Photography?

Yes. Parents and siblings are included in Signature Newborn Sessions, including sessions held in your home. I plan for full-family photographs, sibling images, each parent with the baby, and smaller combinations whenever possible.

What happens if my home does not have much natural light?

Your entire home does not need to be bright for an in-home newborn session. I look for the room with the strongest usable window light, and if the available light or layout is not a good fit, we can discuss using my Northeast Minneapolis studio instead.

Do I need to buy clothing for an in-home newborn session?

Not necessarily. My In-Home Newborn Photography experience includes wardrobe guidance, along with client wardrobe options for mothers, newborns, and younger children. You may borrow selected pieces or use clothing you already own.
