Making Your Minnesota Photo Session a Stress-Free, Fun Experience
Booking a photo session is exciting—whether you're celebrating a growing baby bump, welcoming a newborn, documenting your baby’s milestones, or gathering the whole family for updated portraits. But let’s be real, preparing for a session can feel overwhelming. What do we wear? Will the kids cooperate? What if my toddler suddenly decides pants are optional?
I get it. My goal is to make your session as easy and enjoyable as possible so you can actually have fun while we create beautiful images together. When you’re relaxed, it shows in your photos, and trust me—those effortless, joy-filled images happen when you’re not stressing over the little things.
That’s why I’m sharing my top five tips to ensure you’re fully prepared for your session. Follow these, and you’ll walk away with stunning portraits and a great experience to go with them. Let’s dive in!
1. Dress to Impress (Without the Stress!)
Outfits can make or break a session, but that doesn’t mean you need to spend hours stressing over what to wear. In fact, I’ve made it super simple for you!
Enter: My Studio Wardrobe.
I offer a carefully curated wardrobe full of stunning dresses for moms, stylish pieces for dads, and adorable outfits for kids under five. This means:
- ✔ No last-minute shopping stress.
- ✔ No worrying about what looks good on camera.
- ✔ No dealing with returns when that “perfect” dress doesn’t fit quite right.
If you prefer to wear your own clothes, I totally get it! To make outfit selection easier, I provide a monthly style guide with outfit inspiration, its a Look Book with clickable links to beautifully coordinated family ensembles. Pro tip? Stick with neutral tones, soft textures, and timeless silhouettes to create a cohesive and elegant look in your photos.
Whatever you decide to wear, the key is comfort and confidence. If you feel great in your outfit, it’ll show in your photos.
2. Choose the Right Location for Your Vision
One of the first questions I ask is: Where do you envision your session? Some families love the cozy, controlled environment of my studio, while others prefer the natural beauty of an outdoor setting.
If you’re dreaming of an outdoor session, let’s talk location! Minnesota offers gorgeous backdrops year-round, from golden fields in the fall to lush greenery in the summer. Some of my favorite spots include:
- 🌿 Tamarack Nature Center – Perfect for wide-open fields and dreamy golden light.
- 🌳 Como Park – A mix of nature and architecture with gardens, stone bridges, and tree-lined paths.
- 🏙 Urban settings – Think chic, minimalist cityscapes with clean lines and soft neutral tones.
A huge part of preparing for a Minnesota photo session is choosing a location that fits your family’s personality. Love casual, candid shots? Let’s find a spot where your kids can run free. Want something polished and classic? My studio offers a timeless setting with beautiful natural light.
If you’re unsure, don’t worry—I’ll help you find the perfect spot!
3. Set the Kids (and Yourself) Up for Success
Let’s talk about the real stars of the show—the kids! I know parents worry about whether their little ones will cooperate, but here’s the secret: the best photos happen when kids feel comfortable and free to be themselves.
Here’s how to set them up for success:
- ✔ Hype up the session. Talk about it in a fun, positive way leading up to the day. Let them know it’s going to be an adventure!
- ✔ Schedule wisely. Choose a time that aligns with their happiest hours—right after a nap and snack is usually ideal.
- ✔ Bring their favorite music. I have a speaker and can play their go-to songs to keep them engaged (let me know their favorites in advance!).
- ✔ Let them be little. If they need a break, we take one! Some of my favorite images come from kids just being themselves—laughing, twirling, exploring.
And remember, your energy sets the tone! If you’re relaxed and having fun, your kids will follow suit.
4. Trust the Process & Let Go of Perfection
I know it’s easy to get caught up in wanting everything to go perfectly. But the beauty of a session isn’t in perfectly posed smiles—it’s in the authentic moments that unfold when you’re just enjoying the experience.
I approach every session with a child-led, stress-free approach. This means:
- I encourage natural interactions over stiff posing.
- I guide you in a way that feels relaxed and fun.
- I focus on real connection, genuine laughter, and beautiful in-between moments.
The best thing you can do? Show up, be present, and trust that I’ve got you covered. If the wind picks up, a kid gets the giggles, or someone refuses to look at the camera—embrace it! Those little quirks make your images real and meaningful.
5. Remember the Why—These Images Are for You!
At the end of the day, this session isn’t about creating perfect photos—it’s about creating images that feel authentic to your family and meaningful to your story. These are the photos you’ll look back on years from now, the ones your kids will see in albums and frames.
So, let’s make it a session that feels joyful, effortless, and completely YOU.
Final Thoughts: Relax & Enjoy the Experience!
I hope these tips help you feel excited and ready for our session! When you prepare ahead of time, you’re setting yourself up to actually enjoy the moment, and that’s when the best images happen.
