Last November, my Minneapolis studio was filled with the delightful chaos and energy of a family session featuring triplets. It was a heartwarming and nostalgic experience, as I had the privilege of photographing this same family a couple of years ago when the triplets turned one. Now, at three years old, the two boys and one girl brought an incredible amount of enthusiasm and vivacity to the session. Although the atmosphere was a bit hectic, we managed to capture some truly beautiful portraits that the family will cherish for years to come.
Revisiting Familiar Faces
Seeing the triplets again, now three years old, was a wonderful experience. The first time I photographed them was when they turned one at Tamarack Nature Center, and they were not yet walking. Fast forward to November a couple of years later, and they were full of life, bouncing off the walls with boundless energy. Photographing three-year-olds is always a challenge, but it’s a challenge I relish because of the genuine and spontaneous moments that arise.
The session began with a warm welcome and a quick catch-up with the family. It was clear that the triplets had developed unique personalities and a strong sibling bond. Their parents had a great sense of humor about the expected busyness of the session, understanding that capturing the perfect portraits of three energetic children would require patience and flexibility.
Styling with the Studio Wardrobe
One of the highlights of this session was dressing the entire family from my studio wardrobe. Having a curated selection of clothing on hand allows for a cohesive and stylish look in the photos. For this session, the mother had a particular fondness for a green sweater from Zara for one of the boys, which became the anchor piece for the rest of the outfits.
We paired the green sweater with complementary pieces to create a harmonious look for the family. The little girl wore a charming dress from Noralee, one of my favorite places to shop for kids' clothing. The other boy’s sweater was from Oat & Co., adding a touch of classic style to the ensemble. The parents' outfits were selected to blend seamlessly with the children's clothing, ensuring that the family looked effortlessly coordinated.
The ability to provide wardrobe options in my Minneapolis studio photo sessions is something my clients appreciate, as it reduces the stress of outfit planning and ensures that everyone looks their best. This session was a perfect example of how thoughtful wardrobe choices can enhance the overall aesthetic of family portraits.
Capturing Energetic Moments
Photographing three-year-old triplets is an adventure in itself. Their boundless energy and curiosity meant that they were constantly on the move, exploring the studio and interacting with each other. While this made for a somewhat hectic atmosphere, it also provided countless opportunities to capture candid and authentic moments.
I focused on creating a relaxed and fun environment where the triplets could be themselves. This approach not only helped them feel comfortable but also allowed me to capture their genuine expressions and interactions. Whether it was the boys playing together or the little girl twirling in her dress, each moment was a testament to their vibrant personalities.
Despite the busyness, the session yielded a beautiful collection of portraits. From individual shots highlighting each child’s unique character to group photos showcasing their sibling bond, the images reflected the joy and energy of the triplets. This Minneapolis studio photo session was a reminder of why I love working with children – their spontaneity and authenticity always shine through in the photos.
Embracing the Chaos
One of the keys to a successful family photo session, especially with young children, is embracing the chaos rather than trying to control it. This was particularly true for this session with the triplets. The parents were wonderfully understanding and supportive, knowing that perfection lies in capturing the real moments, even if they are a bit messy.
Given the limited 30-minute timeframe, there was no room for breaks. I had to photograph quickly and efficiently to keep up with the energetic triplets. Despite the fast pace, this approach allowed me to focus on capturing beautiful and expressive portraits that truly reflected the children's lively personalities.
The parents' relaxed attitude was instrumental in creating a stress-free environment, even within the short session. Their willingness to go with the flow helped ensure that the children's smiles remained genuine and that their natural, playful state was beautifully captured.
By the end of the session, we had a diverse gallery of images that told the story of this lively and loving family. The portraits not only showcased the children's individual personalities but also their strong family connection. It was a delightful experience that reaffirmed my passion for family photography and demonstrated that even in a brief session, it's possible to create meaningful and memorable images.
A Memorable Experience
Photographing this family with triplets in my Minneapolis studio was an unforgettable experience. The session was filled with energy, laughter, and genuine moments that translated beautifully into the portraits. Dressing the family from the studio wardrobe added a stylish and cohesive touch to the images, while the candid approach captured the true essence of the children.
I invite you to leave a comment and share your thoughts on this session. Have you experienced a similar joyous chaos with your own family photos? How do you manage to capture the perfect moments amidst the busyness? I’d love to hear your stories and any tips you might have!
