This fall family photo session was one of the first this fall. I remember being quite worried about the weather but the beautiful sun came out in full glory right before our session. It had been raining days before and earlier that morning. But as with all Minnesota days, things can change quickly. I always suggest waiting until approximately 2 hours before your session when deciding on whether or not to reschedule because of weather.

Fall is the busiest of times for photographers. Most families want those fall foliage images. My fall calendar goes live in July and almost always books up immediately. Fall sessions start in September and finish up in November. September fall sessions are usually still quite warm but unfortunately not a lot of color foliage yet. October fall photo sessions are really unpredictable. The foliage is usually quite beautiful but the weather is either hot or extremely cold. You just never know what you will get from one week to another. Many families do not like photographing in November because it's usually quite cold and the foliage is gone. This doesn't mean, however; that you will not get beautiful images. You need to be prepared and find a location that isn't dependent upon foliage. Your family photos are about you and your relationship with your family. It is not about the backdrop so don't think that you have to have the most stunning location to get wonderful images of you and your family together.

But this family photo session was done middle of September at Elm Creek. This is quite a lovely location and isn't used a lot so we didn't see a lot of other people there. Which is really nice when you are not competing with other photographers to get your shot. They do require a permit so if this location is something you are looking into, we need to plan accordingly.
