When you speak to people about family photos, everyone has very different opinions – some love getting everyone together while others would prefer to avoid it altogether.
It’s no secret that family photo sessions take a lot of time and effort. From getting siblings to play nicely to ensuring everyone gets to the venue on time, family shoots are work. However, there are ways to make the experience more memorable and fun.
3 Common Family Photoshoot Mistakes to Avoid
Here are the mistakes to avoid if you want to feel more excited about family photo sessions in the future.
Mistake 1: Picking the First Photographer You Find
The key to having a pleasant photoshoot is finding a photographer you feel comfortable with, which is especially important if your family is more introverted. When everyone in your family feels comfortable, your photos look natural too. Before you schedule your shoot, take the time to meet with at least two professional photographers to decide who is a better match for your family. If neither of them is, continue your search or ask someone for a recommendation. The photographer you choose should specialize in family sessions and should show a keen interest in your family and the types of photos you want to take.
Mistake 2: Trying to Control the Session
Naturally, you want the family photo session to go smoothly but when you try and control every single detail, you’re only going to end up having a negative experience. It’s better to come to terms with the fact that you’re dealing with a large group of people that includes kids and trust that your photographer will know what to do to get the best photos.
Mistake 3: Not Coordinating Your Outfits
Coordinating your outfits does not mean wearing identical clothes – it means wearing the same style of clothing and complementary colors. If there will be more than one family in the shoot, make sure that everyone is on the same page in terms of not wearing bright colors, bold patterns or clothing with logos. Adding patterns and textures to the shoot is perfectly fine provided it doesn’t take the attention away from the people in the photo.
