Everyone should have some beautiful family photos that they can pass down to their kids and grandkids. These types of heirloom-quality photos do require a specific approach though as they need to capture the essence of your family.
Whether you’re planning your first family photoshoot, or your annual shoot is coming up, these tips will ensure these are photos your kids will want to keep for years to come.
- Create a Look
Coordinating your outfits does take some planning but it’s well worth it. Your photos should set a tone and tell a specific story. This can be done with clothing as well as the right props. For example, if tradition is important in your family, you may want to take a classic family portrait in formal outfits. If your family loves spending time outside, wearing fitted jeans and shirts and matching accessories in an outdoor setting will tell an entirely different story.
- Decide on a Location
Once you decide on the overall look and feel of your family photos, choosing a location is a lot easier. A photo studio will always be an option, but today’s families prefer locations that make them feel comfortable and suit their unique style. Your location will play a leading role in the theme of your photos and determine what kind of lighting your photographer has to work with. First, decide whether you want an outdoor or indoor setting before you start narrowing down your options. An outdoor location will offer great lighting, but the weather could affect your shoot. An indoor setting won’t be affected by the weather, but the backdrops will be slightly more limited. Whatever option you choose, make sure your photographer has the necessary experience.
- Showcase Your Personalities Using Poses
There is no rule that says you should all be facing the camera for your photos. Work with your photographer and get creative with poses to make your family photos even more unique. Candid shots also work really well because the expression and smile of each family member looks much more natural. It all depends on the photo style you’re interested in.
- Make It Flattering for All
You may have a specific style in mind for your photos, but this doesn’t mean it’s the best approach for everyone that will be in the shot. The location, outfits, and lighting should flatter everyone in your photo if you want the shot to look great. Your photographer can also correct any minor inconsistencies during the editing process if need be.
- Use Your Photos
Once you make the effort to take eye-catching shots of your family, put them to use. Whether you print the photos for your home, create holiday cards, or a custom photo book, just don’t let your photos sit on a USB or your computer indefinitely.
