As a new parent, the first year with your baby is a whirlwind of amazing moments and incredible changes. One of the best ways to document this special time is through professional newborn photography. Let's explore why it's so important to get those newborn shots and how to make the most of your session.
The Window is small
Babies grow and change rapidly in those first few weeks. Their tiny features, squishy cheeks, and delicate expressions are fleeting. Professional newborn photography allows you to freeze those details in gorgeous portraits before they morph into a rambunctious baby. The ideal window is just 5-14 days after birth when babies are still very sleepy.
Printing Lasting Memories
While you'll take hundreds of smartphone pics, there's something truly special about professional printed photographs. Wall art and albums curated by an expert become priceless family heirlooms to remember for generations. Don't let those amazing newborn moments get buried in your camera roll - print them out big and proud!
What to Expect From a Session
A full newborn photography session with me has no time limit but is typically 1-2 hours long to allow for feedings and cuddles. I take a lifestyle approach which means everything is simple, classic and timeless. No dated props or cheesy backdrops. The studio is a beautiful natural light space with white walls and white floors keeping the focus on you and your baby not any set design. I take a baby-led approach to my sessions so there are no crazy posing, no uncomfortable positions an no long drawn out session trying to get baby to sleep. Whether you baby is awake or asleep you will get beautiful, natural images.
Including Siblings
If you have older kids, it's so sweet to include them in some newborn shots. This documents those first sibling bonds and their new role. However, toddlers can be unpredictable, so have low expectations and just embrace whatever authentic moments we can capture between the kids.
Printing for the First Year
Once you have those invaluable newborn portraits, consider booking another session around 6 months. Babies change so much in that first half year! Then wrap up the first year with a commemorative cake smash session at 12 months. Displaying anniversary albums, framed print series, and memory boxes are wonderful ways to showcase that amazing first year of growth.
Choosing Your Photographer
Perhaps the most important aspect of newborn photography is choosing an experienced, patient photographer you can trust. Gauge their newborn skills and be sure they have ample experience safely posing and handling babies. Review their portfolio for styling you love that aligns with your vision. And most importantly, go with someone who makes you feel comfortable and respected.
The first year is brutally fast and chock-full of extraordinary milestones. Freezing those fleeting moments through the timeless artistry of newborn photography ensures you'll be able to look back and remember every incredible detail. It's an investment that lets you slow down and savor one of life's most profound experiences.
