There are some places that instantly feel like a hidden gem the moment you arrive — and photographing for the first time at the Lyndale Rose Garden in Minneapolis was definitely one of those moments for me. Even though this session was technically with my daughter, I knew from the very first few frames that this wasn't just going to be a beautiful spot for senior portraits. This place is perfect for all kinds of sessions — from maternity and newborns to cake smashes, motherhood portraits, and family photo sessions.
If you’re on the hunt for a gorgeous outdoor location with endless flower backdrops, charming nooks, and just the right touch of whimsy, Lyndale Rose Garden photography might just be exactly what you’re looking for.
We visited the Lyndale Rose Garden in early September, and it was seriously a dream. Even though the peak rose bloom happens earlier in the summer, there were still plenty of flowers in bloom, and the grounds were absolutely stunning.
As someone who’s always on the lookout for beautiful locations that work for multiple types of photo sessions, I couldn’t believe I hadn't photographed here sooner. Between the neatly manicured gardens, the sweeping rows of roses, and the pops of late summer color, it truly felt like every direction I turned had the perfect backdrop.
One thing I especially loved about the Lyndale Park Rose Garden photo session experience was how relaxed it felt. There's something about being surrounded by flowers that just makes people naturally slow down, breathe, and enjoy the moment — which, of course, translates into even more authentic, beautiful photographs.
Whether you're envisioning a maternity session among the blooms, family photos with little ones running through the garden paths, or even a sweet newborn session snuggled up under the shade trees, Lyndale Rose Garden photography offers a picture-perfect setting.
After soaking up all the beauty at the Lyndale Rose Garden, we wandered across the street to The Peace and Rock Garden — a spot I had photographed at before and couldn’t wait to revisit. Even though it wasn’t my first time there, it still felt refreshing to see it again with new eyes (and new light!).
The Peace and Rock Garden is such a unique part of the park — a beautiful mix of serene paths, lush greenery, rugged stone textures, and little tucked-away corners perfect for photos. One thing I really noticed this time was how peaceful it was compared to my last visit. When I had been there before, it was full of fall family photo shoots (which makes sense because it’s gorgeous!), but because we went during the week and earlier in the season, we practically had the place to ourselves.
It’s a small area, so visiting on a weekday — and aiming for September rather than October — definitely makes for a more relaxed experience, especially if you’re hoping for those natural, candid moments without working around big crowds.
The Peace and Rock Garden feels quieter and more intimate than the main Rose Garden, making it ideal for peaceful motherhood portraits, cozy newborn sessions, maternity photos, or even adventurous family sessions where little ones can explore and climb among the stone pathways.
One of my favorite things about this spot is how much variety it adds to a gallery without needing to travel far. In just a few steps, you can move from soft floral backgrounds to rugged stone textures and lush greens — and it all flows together so naturally. Lyndale Rose Garden photography, paired with a stroll through The Peace and Rock Garden, truly gives you the best of both worlds!
Even though I happened to be photographing my daughter for this particular session, it became super clear to me that this location isn’t just for senior portraits. In fact, it’s now on my personal favorites list for several reasons — and not just because of the flowers (although let’s be honest, the flowers are amazing).
Here’s why the Lyndale Rose Garden is such a versatile spot for photography sessions:
