Minnesota Family Photos That Feel Real and Fun

Before the cake comes out, we always start with portraits. Every single time. This order keeps things easy. It also keeps outfits clean. And it keeps everyone relaxed.

We began on my white wall and white floors in my NE Minneapolis studio . That clean setup makes everything feel bright and timeless. It also lets skin tones look soft and natural. Then we moved over to my limewashed blue wall for a second look. That wall adds depth. It also gives you variety without switching backdrops. Because I don’t use backdrops. I built the studio so the walls are the look.

We kept posing simple and quick. We captured snuggles with each parent. We grabbed sweet sibling moments. We let the older kiddo move and play a little too. Those in-between laughs always hit.

These portraits matter. They tell the “before” story. They feel calm. They feel connected. And they give you family photos you can hang on the wall.

Then we brought out the cake.

Once the cake arrives, the session shifts. The frosting starts. The hands dive in. The curiosity takes over. And honestly, it’s pure magic. We lean all the way in. We let your little one explore. We let the mess happen. We document every sticky smile and frosting-covered chin.

That’s why cake smash sessions feel so fun in the studio. You get clean, classic portraits first. Then you get the full cake smash experience after.
