Are you wondering what a photo session with a newborn who's already a couple of weeks old will be like? Will they be too awake and not able to be posed for photos? Fear not! In this post, I'll show you some images from an older newborn session in my Minneapolis studio. The little one was already almost 3 months old; he had a 52 day journey in the NICU first. I had such a fun time photographing this family! Keep reading to hear their special story.
Meet Joey! He was born via a surrogate on February 18, 2022. The surrogate's water broke at 27 weeks and she was able to keep him in for another 2 weeks when he was ultimately delivered via c section at 29 weeks 2days. Weighing in at 3lbs 15.5in mom walked in to the operating suite as they were pulling baby out. He's their little fighter!
I asked mom how she felt when she first saw her baby and her story moved me to tears so I want to share with you her words.
"Seeing Joey for me the first time was a really surreal experience. We knew he was coming early because our surrogate, Maria’s, water had broken at 27 weeks and she had been hospitalized at the mother baby center, but when I received a call from her at 29 weeks, two days on February 18 that she was being prepped for a C-section because she had started contracting it is something you can’t ever really prepare yourself for . I immediately jumped in the car and drove to Abbott, leaving my husband Beau home to get our daughter Ruby who is 2 1/2 settled with my sister and one of our close friends Andrea who is ironically the surrogate carrier for our daughter Ruby as well as our surrogate Maria’s two children since her husband Cole was on his way up from Montevideo at the time to be with her in the hospital. It was chaotic to say the least. As soon as I got to the hospital they handed me a surgical gown and cap and said they would bring me in as soon as I was dressed. I waited in her labor and delivery room for about five minutes and nervously cleaned and packaged random things in bags knowing that she would be soon moving to the postpartum floor. One of the nurses came and got me and very calmly escorted me to the operating suite when I walked in saw Maria was already prepped for surgery but little did I know she was actually already opened and the surgeon was ready to remove Joey. Within about a minute of me walking into the operating suite the surgeon announce that baby was here! I was in complete shock but also in love. I heard him cry and there was no better sound in the world. I was able to comfort our surrogate Maria make sure she was OK and then anxiously follow Joey into the next room where he was being checked on by the amazing staff from Minnesota Children's after a few minutes he was intubated to help him breathe and shortly there after was brought over to the level four NICU where we began what ended up being a 52 day NICU stay".
Mom told me her favorite part of the session was that I just let them be them and do their thing. While we got those posed shots we also got more candid moments and I think those were her favorite as well as mine. They are such a beautiful family.
I love that when I asked how she prepped for the session she said "picked out an outfit fed a bottle and hoped for the best"! And the best is exactly what happened.
Mom's advice to someone getting newborn photographs taken?
"Go with the flow".
Older newborn sessions can be just as fun and special as those fresh few days sessions. If you have a baby that is already a couple of weeks old, don't worry! Contact me to schedule your session and we'll get some beautiful images of your little one.
