Photography tips for photographing your newborn
Becoming a mom is one of the most amazing things that can happen to a woman. As if the feeling of having a new life growing inside you isn't amazing enough, the moment your baby is born is pure magic. And as every new mom knows, those early days and weeks are a blur of sleepless nights, feedings, and diaper changes. But it's important to take some time to capture these fleeting moments, because before you know it your little one will be all grown up! Here are some tips for photographing your own newborn.
- If you have a north facing window, photograph by that.
- If you don’t have a north facing window and have harsh sunlight coming in, you can hang up a white sheet or shower curtain to diffuse the light (taping it to the curtain rod would work).
- Try not to have the light coming from behind baby. Phones don’t usually handle backlighting well.
- Have baby's head closest to where the light is coming from, and not the feet
- Turn all overhead lights off and use natural light only. Mixing natural and artificial light can give weird, unnatural shadowing.
- When baby takes a nap, put them in a neutral outfit. You can then move baby onto a blanket from there for some sleepy photos.
- Take a lot of different angles. Some from straight over head, some from the side, etc. Play around with it and you’ll be able to see what works and what doesn’t.
- Don’t forget to take some detail photos - ears, nose, toes, fingers. I like to get one of them holding one of the parents fingers just to show how little they are.
- If you have any sort of blanket or swaddle, use that for some photos either wrapped around or draped over baby.
- For sibling photos, you could have them all lay on a bed with pillows under their heads so their heads are propped up a bit and have baby in the middle. Then shoot from over head (best to do this when baby is asleep/not squirmy, and make sure a sibling has secure arm on baby.
Although it’s not the same as having a professional photographer there for your newborn session, hopefully these tips will help you capture some beautiful memories of your little one in their early days. Don’t forget to have fun with it! Newborn photography can be really enjoyable and rewarding, so take your time and enjoy those first few weeks with your new family member.
