It's that time of year again! The holidays are just around the corner and what better way to celebrate than with a festive family photo session? But before you book your session, it's important to take some time to plan out your outfits. Here are a few tips to help you style the perfect holiday mini session.
There are a few things to keep in mind when selecting clothes for your holiday mini session. First, you'll want to make sure everyone is comfortable. No one wants to be squirming in their clothes during photos. Second, you'll want to choose colors that compliment each other and the background. And lastly, don't forget about accessories! A few well-chosen accessories can really make an outfit pop.
Now let's get into the nitty-gritty of styling your holiday mini session.
Matching vs Coordinating Colors
One of the most common questions I get asked is whether or not everyone should be matching in their outfits. The short answer is no. You don't necessarily have to match, but you do want to coordinate. What's the difference? Matching colors means everyone is wearing the exact same color or colors. Coordinating colors means everyone is wearing complementary colors that look good together.
For example, if everyone in your family has dark hair, you might consider coordinated outfits in jewel tones like emerald green, royal blue, or deep purple. Or if everyone has lighter hair, pastel colors might be a better option. Another thing to keep in mind is the background of your photos. Because we will be in the studio with holiday decor this is a great time to dress up with golds and rich colors that might not always be recommended. I still request you stay away neon and bright colors like magenta, these colors just don't photograph well.
Accessories
Don't be afraid to add a few festive touches with accessories! Consider adding a plaid scarf or some fun holiday socks. Small children always look adorable in hats or bows too. Just make sure whatever you choose doesn't take away from the faces of your loved ones in the photo.
I hope these tips helped inspire you as you start planning your holiday mini session outfits! Remember, comfort comes first and you can never go wrong with coordinated colors and a few fun accessories. I can't wait to see what you come up with!
