It's that time of year again! The holidays are just around the corner and that means it's time to get your holiday mini session on the calendar. But if you're like most families, the thought of getting everyone dressed and out the door for a photo session is enough to send you into a stress spiral. Never fear! With a little planning and these tips, I promise you can have a smooth and stress-free holiday mini session.
Pick The Right Photographer
This may seem like an obvious one, but it's important to make sure you are choosing a photographer whose style you love and who you feel comfortable with. The last thing you want is to be unhappy with your photos because you didn't love your photographer or their style. When you're looking at portfolios, pay attention to not only how the photographer captures the essence of their subjects, but also how they interact with them - especially if you have young children. You want to make sure they will be patient and kind with your kiddos while still getting great photos.
Plan Your Outfits Ahead Of Time
This is probably my number one tip for having a stress-free photo session. Nothing derails a photo session quite like everyone fighting over what to wear. By planning ahead and laying out everyone's clothes the night before, you can avoid all that drama (and those dreaded last minute outfit changes). I recommend sticking to neutral colors and simple patterns - things that won't be too distracting in your photos. And definitely make sure everyone is comfortable in what they're wearing! If someone is itching or uncomfortable, it will show in the photos. Did you know that I offer a studio wardrobe for families wanting it? Take a peek here: STUDIO WARDROBE
Don't Rely on Bribes
If you have young children, chances are good they may not want to be photographed. And while many parents and photographers are not above bribing. It's a last resort for my process. I actually ask you not to bribe the kids with candy or something to do after the session (like a toy or ice cream). All this does is set the kids to focus on that one thing, and the fact they don't have it. Plus it puts them in the mind set that this is something that isn't fun. If you set this up to your kids about how much fun they will have, then guess what? They will have fun! Now if nothing is working and we need to break out the bribes, I offer tiny stickers because they are easier to photoshop out then your child munching on a fruit chew. I've been photographing children and families for over 12 years now, please trust me and the process.
With just a little bit of planning, you can totally rock your holiday mini session this year! Choosing the right photographer, planning outfits ahead of time, and being prepared, and telling your kids just how much fun they will have will go a long way toward making sure everyone has a good time (and that you end up with some amazing holiday photos).
