Congratulations on your new arrival! This is such a special time and I'm honored that you're considering me to capture these memories for you. Newborn photo sessions are best held when baby is between 5-14 days new. This is when they still curl up so nicely and haven't quite figured out how to stretch out those long legs yet ;). I have some tips to help you get the most out of your session.
What to Wear
Mom, you should wear something that makes you feel beautiful. This is a time when you should be in the photos with your baby. You can choose to wear something from my studio wardrobe or wear something from home. If you plan on using one of my dresses, I suggest wearing nude undergarments since you never know what you'll choose until you are at the studio. Keep in mind that layers always photograph well too! A cardigan or scarf can add interest to your images without taking away from the focus on you and your baby. You can see some examples of what other moms have worn here.
As for baby, I love simple and classic and have wraps, onesie's and bodysuits to choose from. We will go over all of the outfits and props available before we start the session.
Preparing for Your Newborn Session
I recommend that you feed baby right before we start so they are nice and full (this usually puts them right to sleep!). It's helpful if you keep them awake for at least an hour before your session so they are nice and sleepy when we start. Sometimes that means a car ride or extra laps around the block just prior to our session starting.
I also recommend having someone else watch any other kiddos so you can fully relax and enjoy this time with your new baby. The session will go much smoother if mom isn't trying to juggle holding baby while also trying to corral a toddler - believe me, I've been there ;)!
With that said if there is someone else other than dad watching the toddler be prepared that your toddler may not want to participate in photos. You can always count on whoever is not being photographed to be your toddler's best friend.
What to Expect During Your Session
If your session is taking place in my natural light studio located in NE Minneapolis. We will start with some photos of just baby. I photograph baby whether they are awake or asleep and will not spend hours trying to get them asleep. If there is a young sibling we will start with any photos you want of them together. Then we will add in some family photos if you'd like those as well. And finally, we'll finish up with some images of just your beautiful new baby! Mom & dad are always welcome (and encouraged!) to be in the room during the entire session - I know it can be hard leaving your new babe with someone else but I promise they will be in good hands!
If your session is taking place in your home, I'll ask for you to show me around to the areas you are comfortable with me photographing in. This is usually the living/family room, primary bedroom and nursery. Then once I know where I'll start (usually the room with the best light) we will get started with pretty much the exact for as above.
I hope this gives you a better idea of what to expect during your newborn photo session! If you have any other questions or would like to book a session, please reach out via my contact form or say hello here. Thanks for reading!
