Selfies have become a kind of art – some people just naturally know how to take better photos of themselves than others.
If you want to change things up and start taking selfies that don’t look like the rest, here are a few ways to get more creative.
- Use a tight crop. To really place the focus on you and remove any distracting backgrounds, crop in tight on your face. This will accentuate your features and bring depth and mood to your photo. If you want to get closer, rather move the phone closer to your face instead of using the zoom which reduces the quality of your photos.
- Incorporate water. A pool, lake, or bubble bath can completely change up your selfies. Immersing yourself in water and just having your face peeking out will give your photo a creative and dreamy twist.
- Who said anything about your face? You are the focus of a selfie but this doesn’t mean that the photo needs to be of your face. Recently bought yourself some new sneakers? Why not focus on your feet for an unconventional selfie.
- Use both hands. By using both hands to take a selfie, not only is it easier to press the shutter button but your arms will frame your face. Just remember not to cover the lens with your finger.
- Consider the rule of thirds. Placing your face in either the top-left or top-right corner of the frame will improve your selfie’s composition. Ideally, you want your eye line about a third of the way from the top of the frame and a little off to the side.
- Take a selfie of a selfie. Have someone you can assist you with your selfie? Get them to capture a photo of you taking a selfie for a totally different spin.
Whatever type of selfie you take, remember the importance of lighting and take the time to know which angles work well with your face and body shape.
