In the NICU: A Story of Strength, Love, and Resilience
In the NICU at M Health Fairview University of Minnesota, there is a world filled with the tiniest fighters, the bravest families, and the kind of love that shows up in the hardest moments.
It is a place where time can feel different. Days are measured in feedings, updates, tiny victories, and the hope of getting closer to home. For families in the NICU, every moment carries weight. Every ounce gained, every successful feeding, every steady breath, every quiet cuddle matters.
In the NICU, every tiny milestone matters.
Today, I want to share the story of one sweet baby who brought so much light into the NICU.
Born on December 11, 2022, this little one’s journey began with all the hopes and dreams that come with welcoming a new baby. But as many NICU families know, the beginning does not always unfold the way anyone expected. For this baby and their family, the road ahead included unexpected challenges, with much of their journey centered around feeding.
And feeding sounds so simple, doesn’t it?
Until it is not.
For many NICU babies, feeding can be one of the biggest hurdles before going home. It can take time, patience, support, and so much love. For families in the NICU, the days can feel long, emotional, and full of unknowns. This sweet baby’s journey included time at the University of Minnesota NICU, a transfer to St. John’s, and then a return back again, all in the effort to make feeding more comfortable and manageable.
Through it all, this little one was described as happy and sweet. A tiny warrior with a personality that warmed my heart.
While they were in the NICU, this sweet baby showed so much strength through every step of their feeding journey.
The journey was not easy. Their family faced the uncertainty of transfers, waiting, questions, and the emotional weight of watching their baby work so hard at something most of us take for granted. It was a time of patience, resilience, and deep love.
That is what always stays with me during these sessions.
Not just the medical details. Not just the monitors, the tiny diapers, the feeding tubes, the swaddles, or the hospital rooms. What stays with me is the love. The way parents look at their baby. The way they hold their breath during small milestones. The way relief, exhaustion, hope, and tenderness can all exist in the same room.
My NICU photography sessions are offered as part of my giving back program. These sessions are created for families whose babies are currently inpatient in the NICU and are meant to gently document this chapter of their baby’s story.
Photography in the NICU is not about perfect poses. It is not about polished moments. It is about honoring what is already there.
The strength.
The connection.
The waiting.
The tiny victories.
The love that keeps showing up.
When your baby is in the NICU, it can be hard to see anything beyond the next update, the next feeding, or the next small goal. You are living minute by minute, trying to hold yourself together while also holding onto hope.
For families walking through a NICU stay, photographs can become a meaningful reminder of how far their baby has come. In the middle of it, it can be hard to see the whole story. You are simply doing the next thing. Asking the next question. Waiting for the next bit of news.
But later, these images can become proof.
Proof of the days you got through.
Proof of the strength your baby carried from the very beginning.
Proof of the way your family loved through every uncertain step.
The photographs from this session told a story of determination. They told the story of late nights, early mornings, small milestones, and the bond between this baby and their family. I can only imagine the joy and relief that filled their hearts when they were finally able to bring their baby home.
That is the beautiful thing about these stories. They are not just about the hard parts. They are also about the coming home.
They are about the moment families get to step out of the hospital and into the next chapter. The one with their own crib, their own couch, their own rhythms, and hopefully fewer beeping machines.
I honor this sweet baby and their family, along with every family who has walked the NICU journey. These babies may be tiny, but their stories are anything but small.
Their journeys remind me that even in the face of uncertainty, love and resilience have a way of shining through.
To this little one, wherever they are now, and to all the families who have experienced life in the NICU, I send my warmest wishes for a future filled with happiness, healing, and good health. May their lives continue to be surrounded by the same strength and love that carried them through those early days.
