If you’re a mom, chances are you’re taking photos of your baby every day. They change and grow so quickly, it’s hard to keep up! That’s why many moms choose to do a baby milestone photography session with their family. It’s a great way to capture those special moments and memories that will last a lifetime. If you’re considering doing a milestone photo session, here are some tips to help make it go smoothly.

First, pick a location that will be comfortable for your family. Whether you choose your home or go to a studio, make sure everyone is feeling relaxed and at ease. Second, be prepared for the session ahead of time. Make sure you have outfits picked out and decide on what poses or activities to include.  The session I’m going to share today is a lovely family that came into my studio back in May.  Their son was just about 11 months old.

This baby loves going outside to look at the trees and swing at the playground. He loves chasing around a little bouncing ball his cousin gave him. He is obsessed with faucets and water, and Elmo is his favorite character.

I hear Baby J is becoming quite the little explorer! He’s crawling all over the place now and going to different rooms. He can sit back down on his own without falling, which is great. He’s also started opening all the cabinets and pulling all the drawers. It’s amazing how much he’s grown and changed in just a few short months. He’s really becoming a big boy! It happens fast!  I speak from experience my baby boy is 16!

When I asked mom how they prepared for the session she said they “Just made sure he had a nap before the session so he wouldn’t be too tired. Also made sure he had eaten at least 30 minutes before.”  That’s pretty sound advice, I’d say. Speaking of tips she also said “Try to schedule during a time you know your baby won’t be tired or hungry.”  I couldn’t agree more.

I love when families and I have the same goal in mind; when I took the photos, I wanted them to have a more natural feel. I didn’t want the subjects to be too posed, so I tried to capture them in moments where they weren’t paying attention to the camera. I think the photos came out perfect – they look like real, everyday moments. The subjects look relaxed and comfortable, and the colors are muted and natural. And overall, mom told me she was really happy with the images as well.  And that’s what really makes me happy.

While I have a studio wardrobe available for all my sessions this family came prepared on their own.  Bringing extra clothes for everyone. Mom also made she she had makeup and hair styling tools because it was a rainy day (though she didn’t need it because she looked beautiful) And of course she brought a toy for baby J.  Though she mentioned she wished she brought a few more toys so that we could get his attention during the photoshoot.

I always like to know how parents feel the session went and mom told me they were really happy. That they were a little worried right after because they didn’t think their baby seemed to cooperate, but after seeing their images she said I was able to get some great shots of him and them together as a family.  This is actually a very common theme.  The sessions themselves can feel like nothing is going right but you’ll find that everything is going just as it should and you’ll get some beautiful images of your family.

Mom’s parting advice? “Try not to stress too much about it. Try to enjoy it so that is comes through in the pictures. It was a little stressful for me because it was the first time ever we had done this. But I feel like the next time we do it it will be a lot more fun”.

It was so fun having Baby J in my studio. If you want to document your baby’s milestone with your family, I’d love to photograph him/her for you. Contact me today and let’s chat about scheduling a session!
