Fall is a beautiful time of year, and what better way to celebrate the season than with a family photo session? This past October, I had the pleasure of working with the Lal family – mom, dad and their two-year-old daughter – at Tamarack Nature Center. The family loves going for walks with their dog; unfortunately, Tamarack does not allow dogs so he couldn’t join in the fun. But that didn’t stop them from having an amazing evening full of fall leaves and family fun!

The Session

Mom wore one of my studio wardrobe pieces for her outfit and brought a hat that was a great addition to her look. She also brought extra hair ties and bows for her daughter as well as a coat if it got too cold. Mom told me she was worried about how cold it would be or how hungry her daughter would get during the session but she was prepared with snacks just in case. We had great light during our session and ended up staying out later than expected because we were all enjoying ourselves so much!

Advice From Mom

When I asked mom for any advice she had for other families preparing for their own family photos, she said that being prepared really made a difference in their experience. She recommended bringing extra clothing items like coats or sweaters in case it gets chilly as well as some snacks to keep everyone happy and energized throughout the evening. Having those things on hand can make all the difference when you have young kids involved!

Spending time outdoors with your family can be such a special experience, especially during fall when everything is changing around us. It was an absolute pleasure to work with the Lals on capturing these beautiful memories at Tamarack Nature Center. If you’re thinking about scheduling your own family photos, take Mom’s advice: come prepared with plenty of snacks, warm clothing items, and lots of patience! You won’t regret it!
