What to Expect During an In-Home Lifestyle Newborn Session in Minneapolis

Bringing home a new baby comes with plenty of unknowns. If you’ve never had newborn photos taken before, it’s completely normal to wonder what the session will actually look like.

As a Minneapolis newborn photographer, I spend a lot of time answering these questions before families ever step in front of my camera. Knowing what to expect helps you feel prepared, understand how the session flows, and focus on spending time with your family instead of worrying about every little detail.

An in-home lifestyle newborn session is designed around real moments in your own home. We’ll move at your baby’s pace, take breaks whenever they’re needed, and create photographs that reflect this chapter of your family’s story without feeling rushed or overly structured.

What Is an In-Home Lifestyle Newborn Session?

An in-home lifestyle newborn session focuses on your family as you are, in the space where you’re getting to know your newest family member.

Rather than relying on elaborate props or carefully arranged poses, the session centers on natural interactions. That might include holding your baby, spending time together in the nursery, cuddling on the couch, or simply enjoying the quiet moments that happen naturally throughout the session.

Your baby may be asleep for part of the session, awake for another, or somewhere in between. Every newborn is different, and that’s perfectly okay.

The goal isn’t to follow a rigid shot list. It’s to create photographs that feel honest to your family while giving your baby plenty of room to simply be a baby.

How Do We Plan an In-Home Lifestyle Newborn Session?

Before your session, we’ll spend time talking through the details so you know exactly what to expect.

We’ll discuss things like:

  • Who will be participating
  • Whether siblings will be included
  • Clothing guidance for everyone
  • Areas of your home you’d like to use
  • Any meaningful details you’d love documented

Planning ahead allows us to make thoughtful choices without making the session feel overly structured once the day arrives.

If there are sentimental spaces, meaningful heirlooms, or a nursery you’ve spent months preparing, we’ll talk about including those naturally if they fit your family’s story.

Does My Home Need to Look Perfect?

This is probably the question I hear most often.

The short answer is no.

Your home doesn’t need to look like it belongs in a magazine for beautiful photographs to happen.

Most families have baskets of baby supplies, laundry waiting to be folded, and life happening around them. That’s completely normal during the newborn stage.

Before your session, I’ll help you identify the areas we’ll likely use so you can focus your attention there instead of feeling like you need to prepare your entire house.

Often, only a handful of spaces become part of the session, making preparation much more manageable than many parents expect.

What Happens When Michele Arrives?

When I arrive, we’ll spend a few minutes getting settled before we begin photographing.

We’ll look at the spaces we’ve planned to use, check in on how everyone is doing, and ease into the session naturally.

There’s no rush to start the moment I walk through the door.

If your baby needs a few extra minutes or your toddler wants to warm up first, we’ll simply adjust the pace. Flexibility is part of photographing newborns, and allowing room for those moments helps the session unfold naturally.

Thinking an in-home session might be the right fit for your family?

How Are Newborns Photographed at Home?

Lifestyle newborn sessions are intentionally baby-led.

That means your baby’s comfort guides the flow of the session rather than the clock.

Some babies sleep through most of their session. Others spend much of their time awake, stretching, looking around, or snuggling in a parent’s arms. Both are completely normal, and both create beautiful photographs.

Rather than expecting babies to fit into specific poses, I gently photograph natural movement and connection as they happen.

You’ll likely see a combination of:

  • Baby on their own
  • Parent and baby portraits
  • Family photographs
  • Sibling interactions
  • Nursery details
  • Small moments that naturally unfold throughout the session

Because every baby has their own personality from the very beginning, every gallery looks a little different.

Are Parents and Siblings Included?

Absolutely. While your new baby is the focus of the session, they’re also part of a much bigger story.

Whenever possible, we’ll create a variety of photographs that may include parents, siblings, and the whole family together. If you have older children, I take a child-led approach rather than expecting them to perform on command.

Toddlers have their own ideas, especially when there’s a brand-new baby in the house. Instead of forcing smiles or stiff poses, I look for natural interactions that reflect your family as you are.

Sometimes those moments happen quickly. Sometimes they happen after a snack break or a little playtime. Either way, there’s room for flexibility.

What Happens If My Baby Needs to Eat or Settle?

The answer is simple: we pause.

Newborns don’t work on a schedule that revolves around photography, and I wouldn’t expect them to.

If your baby needs to eat, be changed, or simply spend a few quiet minutes in your arms, that’s all part of the session. Those breaks aren’t interruptions. They’re part of photographing life with a newborn.

If you’d like to include nursing or bottle-feeding as part of your family’s story, we can absolutely do that, too. Many parents choose to have a few feeding photographs, and if you’re breastfeeding, I’m happy to photograph those moments in a modest, comfortable way that feels right for you.

Many parents worry that a fussy baby means the session isn’t going well. In reality, babies cry, stretch, yawn, wiggle, and need comfort. Those moments are completely normal, and we simply adjust as needed.

How Long Does an In-Home Lifestyle Newborn Session Take?

Most in-home newborn sessions are completed in less than two hours, although every family is a little different.

The exact timing depends on your baby’s needs, whether siblings are participating, and how often we pause for feeding or soothing.

Rather than watching the clock, I focus on creating enough time for everyone to settle into the experience without feeling rushed.

Which Parts of the Home Will We Use?

Every home is different, so there isn’t a standard checklist of rooms.

One of the biggest things I look for is beautiful natural light. The rooms with the best window light almost always make the best locations for your photographs, regardless of whether they’re the nursery, primary bedroom, or another space where your family naturally spends time together.

If a room doesn’t receive much natural light, it may not photograph as well. That’s completely okay. We’ll choose the spaces that give us the best light while still feeling like home.

Meaningful details often become part of the story as well. A favorite blanket, the nursery you’ve spent months preparing, or small touches that make your house feel like yours can all be included when they fit naturally into the session.

There’s no expectation that every room will be photographed, and we won’t use spaces simply for the sake of using them.

What Should We Wear for Newborn Photos at Home?

One of the biggest questions families have before their session is what everyone should wear.

The good news is you don’t have to figure it out on your own.

I offer a carefully curated client closet that’s available for both studio and in-home newborn sessions. Before your session, I’ll help you choose pieces that photograph beautifully together and complement your home’s style and natural light.

The client closet includes:

  • Dresses for moms
  • Shirts for dads
  • Outfits for children up to age 5
  • Wraps, swaddles, and other newborn pieces

If we’re photographing your session in your home, I’ll bring your selected wardrobe pieces with me, so everything is ready when I arrive.

If you’d rather wear your own clothing, I’m happy to help with that, too. Every month, I send my families a Looks Book featuring 10 coordinated family style boards with direct shopping links, making it easy to find outfits that work beautifully together. If you fall in love with something in the Looks Book but don’t want to purchase it yourself, let me know. If it’s available, I’ll happily add it to my client closet in your size for your session.

Whether you borrow from the client closet, shop the Looks Book, or wear pieces you already own, I’ll help you create a cohesive look so getting dressed feels simple instead of stressful.

What Happens After the Session?

Once your photographs have been carefully edited, you’ll have the opportunity to view your images and decide how you’d like to enjoy them long after the session is over.

Many families choose albums or finished artwork to display in their homes, while others select a combination of printed products that fit their family best.

I’ll guide you through those options so you can choose what works for your home without feeling overwhelmed by the choices.

Is an In-Home Lifestyle Newborn Session Right for My Family?

An in-home lifestyle newborn session can be a wonderful fit if you’d like your photographs to reflect the place where these first days are unfolding.

It may be a good choice if you would like to:

  • Stay at home with your new baby.
  • Include meaningful spaces like the nursery.
  • Photograph parents, siblings, and your baby together.
  • Take breaks whenever your baby needs them.
  • Capture natural interactions rather than heavily posed images.

Some families prefer a studio session, while others love documenting this chapter at home. Neither option is better than the other. It simply comes down to which setting feels like the best fit for your family.

If you’re still deciding, I’m always happy to help you choose the session that makes the most sense for what you’re hoping to remember.

Preparing for newborn photos doesn’t have to feel like another item on an already full to-do list. Knowing how an in-home lifestyle newborn session works gives you a clearer picture of what to expect, from planning your wardrobe to taking feeding breaks whenever your baby needs them.

Every family is different, and that’s exactly why these sessions are flexible. Whether your baby sleeps through most of the session or spends the morning wide awake, we’ll work together to create photographs that reflect this chapter of your family’s life.

If you’re expecting a baby and would like to learn more about newborn photography in Minneapolis, St. Paul, or the Twin Cities, I’d love to hear from you.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I book an in-home newborn session in Minneapolis?

It’s best to reach out before your baby arrives so we can begin planning your session. Booking during pregnancy gives you time to prepare without feeling rushed after your baby is born.

What if my newborn stays awake during the session?

That’s completely normal. Awake babies can make wonderful photographs, and lifestyle sessions naturally accommodate both sleeping and awake newborns.

Can siblings be included in an in-home newborn session?

Yes. Siblings are always welcome, and photographs can include your whole family as well as individual moments with your new baby. Every child participates differently, so the session follows their pace whenever possible.

Do I need a large or professionally decorated home?

No. The focus is on your family, not the size or style of your home. We use the spaces that work best and tell your family’s story naturally.

Are albums and artwork available after the session?

Yes. After your images are ready, you’ll have the opportunity to select albums and other finished artwork to enjoy in your home.
