I’ve got a super special session for you today that I’ve been dying to post ever since we did the shoot 2 months ago at my studio! The star is, of course, sweet little Emelyn, who was born on February 11th.

Big brother wasn’t on the scene but I asked Mom about how he has reacted to the new baby.

“Emmitt is three years old and loving being a big brother. Yes, there is some jealousy, but he’s thriving. He loves helping put a pacifier in Emelyn’s mouth when she’s crying or getting a rag when she spits up. He loves to snuggle her and give her kisses. If mom and dad aren’t in the room and she starts fussing, he runs to find us and let us know “my baby is crying!!””

How adorable is that?!

Excitement – followed by anxiety and fear was actually mom’s first thoughts when she found out she was pregnant. I think every new mom has these feelings, am I right? But her first pregnancy was complicated with severe Hyperemesis Gravidarum so she was worried that it would happen again.

Once she saw her baby for the first time she was “overjoyed! It’s so much fun finally getting to see the child you’ve been growing inside of you for 9 months”. I too remember this feeling especially after seeing ultrasound pictures you really just can’t wait to meet them.

Emelyn’s newborn session was just mom and baby. Mom’s favorite part of the session was having that one on one time with baby. I can’t agree more, it’s really why I love photographing motherhood sessions. There is just that special bond mom has for her children and it’s nice when they each get that special time together.

Mom’s dress and baby’s wraps were all provided by the studio wardrobe making it relatively easy for mom to prep for the session. All she had to do was feed baby before they got to the studio. Mom just hoped that would make her sleepy. That was one of the things she worried about before the session whether or not baby was going to be sleepy. She wasn’t, but we still got amazing shots! But we also had to take a couple of breaks to feed and that was quite lovely too as we were able to get some nursing photos.

I always like to ask parent’s for advice to give anyone looking at having newborn photographs taken and here is mom’s advice to you:

“Soak up all of the moments. Time is precious when they are this little. Also, give yourself some grace. You WILL look tired in the photographs, but you just gave birth and are caring for a newborn. You’re allowed to look tired!”

I don’t think mom looks tired at all, I think she looks beautiful.
