This winter when the kids were distance learning Kendall had a project due in her art class. Honestly I can’t remember what the project was but she got to choose a few different options and she chose to have me help her with photography. I am not a great person to come to for math homework or even science homework but sometimes I can be helpful in literature and most definitely in a photography project.
My job was to teach her photography. Now there is a lot that goes into the skills of photography and I cannot just teach someone photography in a few hours time but I figured a great way to have fun teaching would be to go on a photo walk. So we headed over to Como Park Zoo and Conservatory. It was absolutely freezing this day so we stuck to the indoor gardens. I gave her one of my digital cameras and I used a couple of film cameras, because well if you know me I cannot just show up with one camera in hand. I brought along some portra 400 and 800 analog film and walked along side her. With a digital camera it’s easier to discuss composition and even settings because it’s all right there with instant gratification. I can show her how I meter with film but it’s a lot harder to grasp what is happening until after you get the film back. But for the most part I let her do her thing with just some tips here and there. I went over the main things in the beginning before we got started but the great thing about art is it’s subjective. I don’t have access to her images but I will say she got some great ones and it was fun going over them with her.
I thought I’d share with you some of my film images from our photo walk at the Como Park Conservatory. What a great place to go when you’re feeling the need for a little beauty in your life. Plus it’s so warm inside that you forget just how cold it is if you head over there on a sub zero day in January.
Como Park is a great place to get some creativity or to go for your next photo session. You can find more information about the park here: COMO PARK ZOO & CONSERVATORY
