As a St. Paul family photographer, I’ve explored endless urban locations in the twin cities for photo sessions. From the St. Anthony square area to the Mill City Ruins, Minneapolis has it all! But when the Arnold Family told me they wanted to explore a downtown urban area that we had not photographed their family at yet, I knew exactly where to take them for the session of their dreams. We absolutely had to plan a St. Paul, Rice Park family photography session!

Rice Park is located in the heart of historic downtown Saint Paul. And since the last time I was there for another family session, completely redone!  Rice Park is home to many festivals, concerts and events throughout the year. The park features a beautiful fountain and is surrounded by the Saint Paul Hotel, Landmark Center, Ordway and the Downtown Central Library. And I don’t know if it’s because of Covid or what but the whole area was pretty empty and to come across that in a downtown location is CRAZY!  The last time I photographed a family at Rice Park Pokemon Go was all the rage and the park was extremely crowded with these gamers.  Boy have times changed.

This empty urban downtown spot, especially in the fall when foliage was getting sparse, was the perfect backdrop for the Arnold family!  The historic buildings we showcased during our Rice Park family session gave the whole session a modern feel, and the brilliant sunshine added a sprinkle of warmth on this beautiful day.  This family looked so at home in the city and their older kiddos fit right in.  

Finding the perfect spot to take family photos, isn’t always easy, but you better believe I’ll be returning here over and over again! Can you believe I’ve been photographing this family for over a decade!  Yes our first family photo session was at a barn and now look at us exploring the downtown area of St. Paul’s Rice Park!
