“Where should I take my family photos?” is a question I get asked all the time. And while there are lots of great places in the Twin Cities, today I want to focus on one location in particular: Tamarack Nature Center.
I’ve photographed families at Tamarack many times, and it’s always a beautiful place for photos. Here’s a breakdown of the pros and cons of this popular spot.
The Pros: Tamarack Nature Center is a great location because it does not require a permit fee. This is a big advantage for families looking for a picturesque backdrop without the added expense. The natural beauty of the center makes it an ideal setting for family photos. With its beautiful open spaces and tall grasses, Tamarack Nature Center provides a stunning backdrop in any season, be it the vibrant colors of fall, the crispness of winter, the blossoming of spring, or the lush greenery of summer.
Another advantage of Tamarack Nature Center is the lighting. The natural light in this location is usually pretty good, especially during the morning or evening hours. Soft, flattering light can make a significant difference in the outcome of your family photos, and Tamarack offers just that.
Moreover, Tamarack Nature Center provides various areas to explore, allowing you to mix things up and keep your session interesting. From wooded trails to open meadows, you can choose different backdrops and create a diverse collection of images. Additionally, since many families have their photos taken at Tamarack, it’s a great place to gather inspiration and ideas for your own session.
The Cons: While Tamarack Nature Center offers many advantages, there are a few downsides to consider. One of the biggest challenges is the popularity of this spot. It can get incredibly crowded, particularly during the fall season. Weekends are the worst in terms of crowds, but even on weekdays in October, you might find yourself jostling for space with other families who had the same idea. If you prefer a more serene and private setting, Tamarack might not be the best choice.
Furthermore, due to its popularity, there is a possibility that your photos might look similar to someone else’s if you’re not careful about posing and composition. It’s important to put your creative spin on the session and find unique angles and perspectives to ensure your family photos stand out from the crowd.
Overall, Tamarack Nature Center remains one of my favorite places to take family photos. The lack of a permit fee, the stunning natural beauty, and the favorable lighting make it an attractive location. But it’s not the only location. There are so many options in the twin cities, let’s get out and explore some different options.
