The first time I heard about "naked" cakes I was at a Clickin Moms conference and the woman speaking kept mentioning them. (She was talking about taking detail shots at weddings) I remember looking at my friend and we both mouthed "naked cakes? What is she talking about?" This was quite a few years ago now but a little search on Pinterest will show you exactly what she was talking about and now these cakes are pretty popular. And because of their simplicity, my favorites!! My clients know how much I really love all things simple.
This recent cake smash was exactly what I love. Now the cake was really "naked" because the baker didn't really understand what my client was asking for but it was fine because it was still simply beautiful. (I would advise though sending your baker some pictures of naked cakes that you find on Pinterest so you can both be on the same page and I'm happy to help with this too). Naked cakes can also be great because usually there isn't too much frosting which might help with the sugar crash your child might experience after a cake smash session. So something additional to think about.
As with all cake smash sessions, we always start with portraits. These sessions do tend to last 45-60 minutes because the first half hour is your milestone session and the second part is all about the cake. If you want to celebrate your child's one year milestone with a few heirloom photos then a petite session is all you need. However; if adding cake, you'll need to schedule a signature session. Trust me you won't regret it. A signature session gives us plenty of time to photograph your baby, celebrate with cake, you'll get all the edited images and you can choose between a coffee table book or proof prints in a keepsake case.
Now I want to share with you this beautiful simple, timeless cake smash session. I just love everything about it. Both outfits for baby and sister borrowed from the studio wardrobe.
