Welcoming Twin Boys with a Cozy In-Home Newborn Session
Last October, I had the pleasure of photographing not one, but two newborn bundles of joy in an intimate in-home session in Edina, MN. It was a memorable day, not only because of the adorable twin boys we were welcoming but also because of the serene and cozy atmosphere we were able to create, despite the dreary weather outside. The soft, natural light streaming into their home provided the perfect backdrop for capturing these precious early moments.
The Joy of Maternity and Newborn Sessions
Before this session, I had the joy of working with this mama during her stunning maternity session at my NE Minneapolis studio. Her natural beauty truly shone through, and it was no surprise that the camera loved her—whether in the bright studio setting or in the comfort of her home. The elegance and grace she brought to both sessions were simply captivating, making every shot a work of art.
The Challenges of In-Home Photography
In-home photography sessions come with their own set of challenges, particularly when it involves newborns. And when you add twins to the mix, it becomes a whole new level of complexity. However, the key to making these sessions successful lies in balancing room space and natural light. Some rooms might have an abundance of beautiful light, but the space could be limited, making it tricky to navigate and capture the perfect angles. On the flip side, spacious rooms might suffer from harsh or inadequate lighting. It’s a delicate dance to find the right spot, but when it all comes together, the results are magical.
Preparing for Your In-Home Session
One thing I always emphasize to my clients is that there's no need to stress over having a perfectly tidy house. Trust me, I’m not here to judge your cleaning skills! Decluttering, however, can make a significant difference. I always suggest clearing away any items that might distract from the focal point of the photos—your family. I might move a few things here and there if I notice something out of place, but my primary focus is on capturing the love, joy, and connection between you and your loved ones. If you're worried about stray items making an appearance in your photos, a quick trick is to gather them up and stash them in a room we won’t be shooting in. For homes with open floor plans, it’s also helpful to consider what might be visible in the background, like the kitchen. Closing doors to less tidy rooms can be a lifesaver!
Embracing a Lifestyle Approach with Newborns
Photographing newborns in a lifestyle setting is truly my passion. I’ve never been a fan of heavily posed baby photos. While posed newborn photography can be beautiful, it’s just not my style. I prefer what I like to call “Baby Led Posing.” This approach is all about letting the newborn take the lead—capturing them in natural, comfortable positions that feel organic and true to the moment. Sure, I’ll place your baby gently for certain portraits, but I don’t subscribe to the more traditional methods of newborn posing where babies are positioned in elaborate, unnatural poses.
Why I Choose Baby Led Posing
Why do I choose this approach? Firstly, I believe that newborns belong in their parents’ arms, where they feel safe and secure. Secondly, I think there’s something incredibly beautiful about capturing babies just as they are—without the need for extra embellishments or intricate setups. Thirdly, safety is paramount, and I prefer not to take any risks with elaborate poses. And lastly, I want your photo session to be as stress-free as possible. After all, welcoming a newborn is a joyous but overwhelming time, and the last thing anyone needs is added stress from a photo session. If you’re curious to learn more about my approach, I’d be more than happy to chat with you!
Sharing the Joy: A Beautiful In-Home Newborn Session
Now, let’s get to the highlight of this post—sharing the absolutely beautiful in-home newborn session where we welcomed these twin boys into their family. Their mom looked radiant in a dress from my studio wardrobe, which I provide to make it easy for my clients to feel beautiful without the hassle of shopping. The simplicity and elegance of the dress perfectly complemented the soft, warm tones of their home, making for a truly memorable session.
I hope these images bring a smile to your face, just as they did to mine while capturing them. Each shot is a testament to the love and joy that these two little boys have already brought into their parents’ lives, and I’m so grateful to have been a part of documenting these precious first moments.
