Most people don’t need to think too hard about what they want to wear on a daily basis but if you’re having a professional photo session, your outfit is going to require a little more thought.
What you wear plays an important role in the success of your photo session and images.
5 Tips for choosing the ideal outfit
- Opt for neutral colors. The reason being, they are classic! They don’t “age” or go out of style, and they are safe. Small pops of colors will look great during sessions, but you always want to stick to muted tones, versus saturated/vibrant colors.
- Consider pairing different textures. Pairing up different textures and fabrics also works really well in photos. I love lace, tulle, velvet.
- Colors to avoid. Orange, bright pink, purple, yellow, red, bright green Colors to try: muted blue, brown, gold, gray, mauve
- Stay away from trends. Fashion trends come and go but your images should last a lifetime, which is why it’s best to stay away from any trending items that could look dated later on. This is not to say that you can’t look stylish, just be cognizant of trends that come and go.
- Make sure your clothes fit. Wearing clothing that fits you well can make all the difference. If your shirt is too small or short, not only will it be obvious in your photos but it will make you feel uncomfortable too, something that will show in your photos. Your clothes shouldn’t be too tight or too baggy so choose your outfit carefully.
If at any point you are unsure about what you should wear, speak to your photographer who will be more than willing to help you out with additional tips.
Another thing to think about is consider the location of your photo session. Outdoor outfit color choices can be different than indoor outfit color choices. As well as the season. While dark colors look great at an outdoor photo session in fall, those same colors don’t look as great if you’re in the studio (or in front of pink trees in the spring). It’s one of the reasons I prefer white, beiges, greys in my studio. This also applies to in-home sessions. Choose outfits and colors that coordinate with your decor. I’ll leave you with a bit of my studio wardrobe . . . .
